Winterizing Your Cabin to Avoid Water Damage in Bel Air, MD

September 19th, 2018 · No Comments

The fall weather in Bel Air, MD is taking hold and winter isn’t too far behind. It’s been a busy few months, but you’ve finally made it up to your cabin to get it winter ready. Without proper winterization your cabin can become a water damaged mess by spring.  Do you know how to winterize your cabin to avoid water damage? The water damage cleanup experts at ServiceMaster Libby Green are here to help with our top tips!

  1. Shut off the water and drain the pipes. The first step in winterizing your summer cabin is to shut off the main water line to your cabin. Once the water has been shut off you should open all the faucets and drain the pipes. By doing this you will ensure there isn’t any water in the pipes to freeze. If water is left in the pipes and they burst, you’ll be facing the need for burst pipe cleanup.
  2. Insulate or drain your water heater. If the water heater is in a part of the cabin that isn’t fully insulated, you need to make sure to either fully insulate or drain the water heater. The reasoning behind this is the same as draining the pipes in step 1. Any water left behind that can freeze can result in water damage come spring when everything thaws.
  3. What to do if facing water damage. If after doing everything you can to avoid water damage you still find yourself in need of water damage restoration, where do you turn?
