Fire - Do’s:

  1. Restrict movement in the home as to prevent soot from spreading.
  2. Keep your hands clean. Soot on your hands can further soil upholstery and carpet.
  3. Place a clean dry colorfast towel on upholstery and high traffic carpet areas.
  4. If you lose electricity, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odor.
  5. If the heat is off and its winter, pour antifreeze in sinks, toilets, holding tanks and tubs to avoid frozen pipes and fixtures.
  6. Change HVAC filer, but leave system off until a trained professional can evaluate the system.
  7. Tape cheese cloth over air registers as to stop soot particles from moving around the home or from penetrating the HVAC system.

Fire - Don’ts:

  1. Do not attempt to wash any walls or painted services. Call ServiceMaster of Bel Air/ServiceMaster by Libby Green 1-800-570-4206.
  2. Do not attempt to shampoo carpet or upholstery.
  3. Do not attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to the fire, heat or affected by water.
  4. Do not eat food that may have been close to the fire. The food maybe contaminated.  
  5. Do not send garments to the dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set in smoke or odor.

Water - Do’s:

  1. Shut off the source of water in your home.
  2. Turn off the circuit breakers in areas of the building which are affected by water.
  3. Remove as much water as possible by mopping and blotting.
  4. Wipe excess water from wood furniture and elevate furniture with wood blocks or foil to get it out of the water.
  5. Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions for drying.
  6. Remove any valuables and place them in a safe and dry place.
  7. Use wood clothespins to pin up furniture skirting, getting out of the water.
  8. Hang furs and leather goods to dry at room temperature in a separate location.
  9. Hang drapes with coat hangers to avoid contact with a wet floor.
  10. Contaminated (sewage) water should be avoided.
  11. If contaminated water is touched, wash hands thoroughly.

Water - Don’ts:

  1. Do not enter rooms with standing water where electrical shock hazards are present or if electric outlets are exposed directly to the water.
  2. Remove books, newspapers, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets and floors as these may cause staining.
  3. Remove Oriental rugs or other color rugs to prevent staining caused by dyes.

  5. Do not enter a room with a sagging ceiling or use overhead fans when water appears in the ceiling.
  6. If water is contaminated do not touch it, walk through it, or turn on your HVAC system/fans. This may spread contaminants through the home.
